So here's the thing... Since we got engaged, my fiancé and I decided we would go the jazz cabaret way all the way. We just love the music, the ambiance in jazz clubs, cocktails dresses and menswear from the 40s! We even booked the oldest jazz cabaret still in use in Montreal for our wedding ceremony and reception in February 2013! So exciting!
The thing is that we're going to one of my cousins' wedding next month, in February. I learnt recently that his fiancée and him are also doing the exact same theme as us... Music, colours, short dress, name it. I'm very fine with the fact that we are actually using our interest in jazz and swing dance to give a special twist to our respective weddings. But we are also in a very judging family, and I'm alreay scared of all the comparisons and bad comments that may arise from this situation...
What should I do? Changing our theme is out of the question, since the jazz cabaret is already booked and we already gave a deposit. (and we love it so much!!) But how can I prevent anyone from being upset (including myself) in the whols thing and prevent any judgmental comments that could hurt??

It sounds like you already made up your mind on what you should do. Stay with your theme. You really shouldn't worry about comments. If people are petty enough to be judgemental and make nasty comments on your wedding that's on them, not you. Do what you have already planned. This is your day and no one should decide on how you want to celebrate it.

Go see the other bride and have a long talk. Get her to laugh about how alike your weddings will be. Next enlist the family gossip. In my family, it's telegraph, telephone, tell-a-Gramma. Gush to family gossip about how you and your cousin have just found out that your weddings are using the same theme. Tell the family gossip how great your cousin has been and how funny that you both found the similarities.

I agree with Magdala: hit it head on before anyone else finds out that you have the same theme going and make it something brag worthy - "in our family we have retro weddings".
Also, remember that just because you have the same theme doesn't mean that your weddings will be alike. Your cousin may have an entirely different take on the swing/jazz theme. After you go to your cousin's wedding you'll know what you need to avoid doing at your wedding to prevent accusations of being a copy-cat. You may even be able to bounce ideas back and forth with your cousin

I agree with this completely! Make it a joke and then you'll feel better about it. Plus, that is pretty funny...what are the odds?

Honestly, the notion of people complaining & commenting negatively is ridiculous (on their part). It's just like when one person uses, let's say, black & red for their wedding & then gets pissed off when their relative uses those colors for her wedding. Hello, you can't buy out colors! You also can't buy out themes.
You have every right to use the theme you love, no matter who else is using it. As PP mentioned, you are different & therefore will likely execute the theme differently based upon your perspective.
Really, the type of people who would be bold enough to say a negative comment to your face are the type of people to comment negatively on anything. If it wasn't this, it would be something else.
Stick to your guns & don't get bent out of shape about it. It's going to be the best day ever, no matter what.

I agree with everyone else. When it comes down to it, colors, themes, etc...Everything has been done time and time again. It's your own personal style and details that makes it original. My mom tried to convince me to not use eggplant as my wedding color because my cousin just did at her wedding. She didn't want her or my aunt to say that I copied her. Well I am sticking with it because it is one of my favorite colors. I'm not changing it because I'm afraid someone might say something. You shouldn't either. Other people have done it in the past, and people will continue to do it in the future.

I think Magdala has great advice to get the word out there that it's a funny coincidence. Also since you have an entire year from their wedding till yours, you have plenty of time to make your unique and different from theirs even keeping with the same theme.

It happens all the time! It turns out one of my best friends that came to my wedding had pretty much the same wedding colors as us and I didn't even realize it until I as looking back through her pictures about 1-2 weeks before our big day. (Unfortunately I wasn't able to attend.)
But our weddings were really so different that I don't think anyone noticed.
